The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center (UT Southwestern) is seeking a distinguished academic leader to serve as the next Neuromuscular Section Head within the Department of Neurology. We invite both physicians and non-physician doctorally prepared investigators to apply.
The Section Head will have opportunity to formulate and execute a comprehensive vision for neuromuscular disorders programs at UT Southwestern, in collaboration with other O’Donnell Brain Institute leaders and faculty. The Section Head will be expected to focus mostly upon the clinical and scientific missions of the program and will be resourced with other faculty leaders within the section to support these missions.
UT Southwestern is in the midst of a tremendous investment in the growth of clinical and laboratory neuroscience programs. The Peter O’Donnell Jr. Brain Institute was recently launched as a vehicle to advance an institutional initiative to make neuroscience and clinical care the top priority at UT Southwestern for the foreseeable future. This very strong commitment is already manifest by many projects, including the opening in 2020 of a major “third tower” addition to Clements University Hospital that serves as the inpatient home to Neurology, Neurosurgery, and Psychiatry, as well as a 270,000 sq. ft. research “brain tower” designed to facilitate cross-disciplinary research efforts involving UTSW’s world renowned scientific community, enabling a major expansion of laboratory-based neuroscience.
The Neuromuscular Section has a long and distinguished record of excellence in clinical care, education, and research. Our current eight adult and three pediatric neuromuscular faculty members have broad clinical expertise and research interests. We provide clinical services not only for the DFW metroplex, but also for the entire state of Texas and surrounding states. We have numerous practicing locations, including the Dallas VA, Parkland hospital, Clements University hospital, Institute for Exercise and Environmental Medicine (IEEM), and Children’s Health Dallas. However, the majority of our practice takes place at the newly remodeled Aston outpatient center at UT Southwestern. We have a well-established accredited neuromuscular fellowship training program for up to 3 fellows per year. The section is well supported by research grants and endowments, including funded multidisciplinary programs for ALS, myasthenia gravis, and muscular dystrophies. We have the privilege of hosting the annual Carrell-Krusen neuromuscular symposium; for over 40 years, this symposium brings together neuromuscular clinicians and experts from across the nation.
