About Mays Cancer Center

The Mays Cancer Center is one of only four NCI-designated cancer centers in Texas and the only one in South Texas. The multidisciplinary faculty includes more than 120 members of UT Health San Antonio representing more than 10 academic departments and 3 schools. The Center saw nearly 4,200 new cancer patients in the last 12 months, had over 40,000 patient encounters and generated nearly 80,000 RVUs overall. The Center holds $19 M in annual total cost NCI funding, and over $32 M in annual total cost NIH funding. In addition, the Center has added 22 NIH-funded laboratory investigators in the last five years, recruited jointly with the Departments of Biochemistry and Structural Biology, Pharmacology, Molecular Medicine, Cell Systems and Anatomy, and Medicine.

In March 2021, UT Health San Antonio broke ground on a new $430 million hospital at the South Texas Medical Center that will focus on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer and other complex diseases. The eight-story, 144-bed hospital will offer specialty care in cancer, orthopedics, urology, and thoracic and bariatric surgery. The facility is set to become a host site for early-phase clinical trials, including all state-of-the-art cell therapies for cancer, from allogeneic stem cell transplantation to CAR-T cells. The hospital is expected to open in December of 2024. The hospital is being built on land donated by the San Antonio Medical Foundation and will be connected to the Mays Cancer Center via a pedestrian sky bridge.
