ABOUT THE J. PAUL GETTY TRUST AND THE GETTY FOUNDATION  

The J. Paul Getty Trust is the world’s largest - and one of its most influential - cultural and philanthropic organizations dedicated to the visual arts. Through its work in Los Angeles and around the world, the Getty advances the understanding, presentation, and conservation of the world’s cultural heritage.The Getty carries out its mission through the collective and individual work of its four constituent programs – the Getty Conservation Institute, the Getty Foundation, the J. Paul Getty Museum, and the Getty Research Institute. The programs serve both the general interested public and a wide range of specialized professional communities, to promote a vital society through an understanding of the visual arts.

The Getty Foundation advances the Getty’s philanthropic mission by supporting institutions and individuals committed to building greater understanding and preservation of the visual arts in Los Angeles and around the world. Since its inception, it has been an important funder of art historical scholarship, museum practice, the conservation of art and architecture, and the development of emerging professionals active in the Getty’s areas of interest. Major grant initiatives in recent years have included PST ART (formerly Pacific Standard Time), the Getty Marrow Undergraduate Internship Program, the LA Arts Recovery Fund, Connecting Art Histories, and Keeping It Modern, among others.The Getty Foundation’s fiscal year 2023 grant budget is $12.5 million. The Foundation has a staff of 23 full-time employees.

THE OPPORTUNITY

As a member of the Getty Foundation’s leadership team and reporting to the Director of the Foundation, the Associate Director will be responsible for overseeing and enhancing as needed, an effective local, national, and international grantmaking strategy for the organization. The successful candidate will be someone experienced in philanthropy who fosters teamwork, cultivates a culture of service, and can align policies and organizational systems to accomplish the programmatic mission of the Foundation. 

The Foundation is working to expand into additional areas of interest, including sustainability and the arts, expanded partnerships, and new approaches to grantmaking. In partnership with the Director, the Associate Director will develop and deliver a strategy for this new era of grantmaking and provide leadership and guidance to the program staff. The Associate Director will also be responsible for establishing evaluation and learning processes to assess the impact of the Getty Foundation’s grant initiatives and will contribute to Getty-wide strategic priorities, working with staff across the institution. To be successful, the Associate Director must be flexible and change-oriented, building on the Foundation’s past while embracing its future, and capable of conveying a compelling vision for new initiatives and directions that is fully embraced by staff, grantees, and other constituents.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Vision, Strategy, and Implementation

  • Serve as an active member of the Foundation’s leadership team.
  • Act as a close thought-partner to the Director.
  • Identify and cultivate new networks and relationships that closely align with Getty’s overall strategic priorities.
  • Partner with the Foundation’s administrative lead to review and refine the annual budgeting process.
  • Work closely with the Foundation’s grant administration team and Getty legal department on legal, compliance, and tax issues.
  • Ensure all staff within areas of responsibility understand Getty’s and Foundation’s mission, vision, and overall direction, goals, strategies, and core values.
  • Facilitate open, honest, transparent communication, sharing of information, and conflict resolution both within areas of responsibility and across the organization.

Grantmaking

  • Provide leadership for local, national, and international grantmaking, to ensure successful integration of the Foundation’s strategic grantmaking framework.
  • Recommend grants that support the Getty and Foundation’s mission and strategies for approval by the Foundation director, Getty president, and board of trustees.
  • Drive effective and efficient grantmaking, including:Š    
    • Contributing information to and collaborating with staff and outside constituents to make decisions around new initiatives, projects, and long-range plans aligned with Getty’s mission, the overall strategic direction of the Foundation, and the guiding principles and values of the organization.
    • Ensuring efficient and effective systems, processes, and practices are in place to accomplish goals and objectives.Š    
    • Capably evaluating risk.
    • Prepare and propose annual grant and operating budget for the division to the Foundation director.
    • Be responsible for overall direction, review, and approval of grant and administrative budgets within areas of responsibility.

Leadership, Team Management, and Relationship Building

  • Take overall responsibility for creating and maintaining an environment that fosters a high-performance learning culture, strong employee morale, teamwork, and effective talent management and utilization.
  • Provide leadership in building and maintaining a diverse workforce and ensuring an environment of inclusivity and belonging.
  • Directly manage a team of approximately seven, including performance planning and goal setting, coaching, performance feedback, and professional and career development.
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with staff across Getty, and with the Foundation’s grant administration team.
  • Be knowledgeable about fields in which the Getty is active and represent the Getty externally as needed.

CANDIDATE PROFILE

While it is understood that no one candidate will bring every desired skill, characteristic, and experience, the following offers a reflection of the ideal candidate profile for the Associate Director of the Getty Foundation.

To be successful in this role, the selected candidate will have a strong knowledge base and passion for the visual arts and a proven commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Their experience will include at least ten years at a senior level in philanthropy, non-profit or educational institutions that includes significant experience in grant-making and roles that include strategy, leadership, and decision-making. 

A graduate degree in arts & humanities, or a related field, equivalent combination of education and professional experience will also be considered. Fluency in one or more foreign languages a plus, as it is beneficial in international grant-making. An ability to travel nationally and internationally as responsibilities require.

The Associate Director will be a forward-thinking leader who will help guide the Getty Foundation into and through a successful next chapter. They will have solid analytical, strategic thinking, and problem-solving skills; the ability to innovate, and with capacity to create or seize opportunities to improve grantmaking effectiveness and impact. The Associate Director will offer demonstrated experience with a diverse range of current grantmaking processes, approaches, tools, and tactics, including strategic philanthropy. Working in close collaboration with the Director, they will help define and articulate the Foundation’s strategic objectives and grantmaking initiatives. With an understanding of global cultural contexts that inform international grantmaking initiatives and work coupled with a big-picture mindset, the Associate Director will push boundaries to uncover new possibilities and partnerships for the Getty Foundation.

The Associate Director will have a proven track record with a lens of diversity, equity, and inclusivity in managing and developing a team: attracting, retaining, and growing talent through performance reviews, professional development, goal setting, and accountability. They will be an inspiring leader who can guide teams through the process of developing a shared vision for the future and effectively implement that vision into day-to-day work. They will be a strong listener, have a high level of emotional intelligence, and be an engaging hands-on leader who can effectively motivate and manage a team. Additionally, the Associate Director will have experience managing a large budget and approach operations and finances with an eye toward sustainability and best practices and will make decisions based on a clear understanding of the strategic objectives of the Foundation.

An Influencer and Relationship Builder

The Associate Director will have demonstrated experience and outstanding abilities in strategic leadership, operational management/administration, managing collaboration, and fostering teamwork and will be skilled at developing effective working relationships within a complex environment and with external partners. They will possess strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build cooperative relationships internally, and effective collaborations and networks around the world. The Associate Director will have demonstrated experience or detailed knowledge of grantmaking and foundation management in a multifaceted organization, preferably in higher education or other relevant settings in the humanities, culture, art, advanced research, or conservation. 

An Ambassador for the Getty

The Associate Director will bring a recognized expertise in philanthropy through established networks, experience, and accomplishments and will be resourceful and able to tap into those relevant networks on behalf of the Getty. They will possess highly developed communication skills; and an ability to effectively represent Getty’s history, mission, values, and strategic priorities in a manner that furthers Getty’s credibility, reputation, and impact. 

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS 

The salary that the Getty reasonably expects to pay is in the range of $185,000 - $200,000. The exact salary that will be offered to the Associate Director will be determined based on a consideration of the successful candidate’s skills, experience, and geography and aligned with the Getty’s compensation policies.
