The Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology at UT Health San Antonio Long School of Medicine (LSOM) is the academic, clinical, and administrative leader of the Department. The Chair is responsible for building a nationally leading program in anesthesia services through the recruitment, retention, and development of the current 104 full and part-time faculty greater than 50% FTE (45 physicians and 59 certified nurse anesthetists) who hold primary appointments in the Department of Anesthesiology. The Chair of Anesthesiology will lead and direct programmatic, clinical research, and educational development within the department. The Department of Anesthesiology at the Long School of Medicine consists of seven Clinical Divisions. Most of the clinical services are provided at the University Hospital (UH), UH Ambulatory Surgical Center (MARC), UH Robert B. Green Ambulatory Surgical Center, and the Audie L. Murphy Veterans Administration Hospital, part of the South Texas Veterans Healthcare System.

UT Health is opening two new facilities between 2023 to 2024. The first will be the Kyle Seale Parkway Ambulatory Surgery Center, opening in April 2024 near the University of Texas San Antonio campus. This facility will feature four operating rooms and attached medical offices. The UT Multispecialty and Research Hospital (MSRH) is expected to open in December 2024, located in the San Antonio Medical Center. The MSRH will have 144 inpatient beds, 9 ED Positions, 12 ORs, 2 Procedure Rooms, 1 Endoscopy Suite, 1 Bronchoscopy Suite, 2 IR Suites, Expansive Lab Services, a Compounding Pharmacy, and a Skybridge connection to the Mays Cancer Center.

The department currently has 60 residents in a 4-year program, including three chiefs in general Anesthesiology. The faculty members are fully committed to providing every learning opportunity for the residents, which is reflected in our statistics. Currently, over 95% of our graduates are board-certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA). The core program as well as our 4 fellows in Pain Medicine and up to 2 fellows in Critical Care Medicine have attained a full resurvey cycle from the ACGME without citation.
