ABOUT NATIONAL MUSEUM OF AFRICAN ART
Founded in 1964, in response to the Civil Rights Movement, the National Museum of African Art (NMAfA) inspires conversations about the beauty, power, and diversity of African arts and cultures worldwide. It joined the Smithsonian in 1979 and became the National Museum of African Art two years later. A new, primarily underground museum building was completed in 1987. The Museum is located on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., adjacent to other Smithsonian national museums. An outstanding resource for artists and scholars and a leader in representing the diversity of African creativity, NMAfA welcomes individuals of diverse backgrounds, ages, and interests to the Museum, with attendance ranging between 130,000-165,000 annually in recent years (pre-COVID). Millions more are exposed to and impacted by the arts of Africa through the Museum’s publications, website, social media, educational activities, and public programs.
