POSITION DESCRIPTION
The University of California Irvine (UCI) School of Medicine seeks to recruit a national leader to hold the position of Chief, Division of Genetic and Genomic Medicine in the Department of Pediatrics. This position will provide overall leadership for medical genetics across UCI, ensuring excellence in the clinical, education, and research missions of the Division. The selected candidate will be an accomplished physician-scientist, responsible for strategic planning, faculty recruitment, and program development. The individual will also facilitate the ongoing integration of training and research with clinical services, oversee Division administrative and financial affairs, and ensure compliance with all governmental and institutional policies. The Division Chief must be a persuasive advocate for medical genetics at UCI and be able to articulate goals, inspire progress, respond nimbly to change, and serve as an active partner in fundraising to support and endow programs.
The successful candidate must demonstrate a personal commitment to the shared values of excellence, innovation, service, scholarship, collaboration, compassion, and accountability. The individual should have strong interpersonal skills, be able to effectively communicate a vision, and have demonstrated leadership capabilities. Candidates should have strong clinical, research, and management experience in an academic department affiliated with a university medical school, with a minimum of 10 years of progressive experience and an increasing scope of responsibility including faculty and trainee mentoring and program development.
Responsibilities Leadership:
- Exhibits leadership and management skills with the ability to inspire and align staff, both within the Division and across the organization.
- Operates effectively in a highly matrixed environment, identifying and engaging key stakeholders.
- Understands the local and national forces shaping genetics in the US and the potential impact on the future of the Division.
- Identifies opportunities for growth, develops specific plans, and monitors the progress of the Divisions’ clinical, research, and educational programs.
- Creates a positive environment that promotes achievement of Division missions.
- Recruits and retains faculty and staff.
- Provides appropriate mentorship for and monitors progress of faculty and fellows across research, education, and clinical functions.
- Develops and nurtures interactions/collaborations with the Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center (CFCCC), the Institute for Clinical and Translational Science (ICTS), the Center for Clinical Research (CCR) and the Institute for Precision Health (IPH) at UCI.
Clinical Care:
- Oversees the operations and delivery of Division clinical care, ensuring high quality and state of the art care.
- Evaluates and optimizes access, clinical productivity, quality, safety, and patient/parent satisfaction across the Division in accordance with appropriate benchmarks.
- Ensures compliance with appropriate medical record documentation, submission of charges, and all internal policies and procedures promulgated by UCI, partner organizations, and external regulatory agencies.
- Promotes outreach to and ensures positive working relationships are maintained with referring physicians.
Research:
- Develops a research vision in collaboration with UCI scientific leadership, that integrates clinical with translational science and health services research opportunities.
- Enhances the culture of academic inquiry through faculty engagement and mentorship as well as fostering intra- and inter-institutional research collaborations.
- Promotes faculty involvement in national organizations, including the American College of Medical Genetics, the Clinical Genetics Society, and the Society for Pediatric Research.
- Advances research infrastructure, as needed, in concert with scientific leadership and research administration.
- Maintains individual clinical/translational research program in defined area of scholarly focus as evidenced by a track-record of academic productivity.
Education:
- Cultivates a culture of mentorship and life-long learning across the education and training continuum.
- Develops opportunities for faculty and trainees to meet academic goals and responsibilities.
- Ensures Division faculty participation and compliance with Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) training requirements for successful program continuation.
Administration and Finance:
- Develops, in conjunction with the Department of Pediatrics administrative leadership, Division budgets for approval and monitors the financial status of the Division on an ongoing basis, creating corrective action plans to address deficits.
- Provides Division annual reports across research, education, and patient care, including notable awards and accomplishments.
- Works together with administrative departments (e.g., Marketing, Finance) in achieving Division goals.
- Actively participates in philanthropic efforts with UCI Advancement and the Department Chair.
- Participates in healthcare system, hospital, medical school, or department committees as requested or appropriate.
- Other duties as may be required or assigned by the Chair or other leadership at UCI.
Qualified candidate will have earned:
- An MD, MD/PhD degree (or equivalent).
- Board certification through the American Board of Medical Specialties, with a preference for certification by the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ABMGG).
- Be eligible for, or currently hold, a medical license in the state of California.
- Meet requirements for appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor in the Health Sciences Ladder Rank Professor series.
- Strong record of scholarly activity, evidenced by high quality peer reviewed publications and a stellar record of research and research support.
- Evidence of substantial contribution to one’s institution through excellence in teaching, clinical expertise, scholarly or creative achievement, and engagement in service.

Criteria for the Ladder Rank and In-Residence Professor Series: Ladder-Rank Faculty will serve as Research Scholars, clinicians, and educators. They are expected to design and lead significant thematic research with extramural support. Teaching is required and may include clinical, classroom or lab teaching. University, Professional and Public Service are required (see https://ap.uci.edu/faculty/guidance/ Section III).
Salary range: The salary range for the position is $177,100-$377,200. The posted UC salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and/or step at appointment. See Professorial Series and Professor of Teaching Series – Health Sciences Compensation Plan. This position may include membership in the health sciences compensation plan, which provides for eligibility for additional compensation.
