About Michael Reese Health Trust
The Michael Reese Health Trust is a catalyst for change and an active player in improving the health and well-being of those in metropolitan Chicago.
For over three decades, the Michael Reese Health Trust (‘MRHT’ or ‘Michael Reese’) has been committed to a healthy Chicago, collaborating with partners across the city and funding ideas and opportunities that will have the greatest impact on the city. The mission of the Michael Reese Health Trust is to improve the health of people in Chicago’s metropolitan communities through its three tools of advocacy, incubation, and grantmaking in their current priority areas, including preventing domestic violence, strengthening the health workforce, honoring its Jewish legacy, and ending homelessness.
Michael Reese was established when the nonprofit Michael Reese Hospital and Medical Center was sold to Humana, a for-profit corporation, in 1991. Carrying on the hospital’s tradition, Michael Reese has since worked to improve the health of Chicagoans not adequately served by existing health systems.
MRHT is transitioning to become a public charity. This reclassification was influenced by the organization’s important legacy. In response to the status change, Michael Reese had to make significant modifications to how they functioned. Operationally, they made administrative, staffing, financial, and programming changes. The human capital growth was exponential and since applying for public status, Michael Reese has been operating as a public foundation in many ways, including increased flexibility and resources for funding partners and making larger investments in community programs, ultimately achieving a greater impact.
The size of Michael Reese is approximately $160 million, and it distributes about $13 million annually through its grant programs. MRHT is the fiduciary of an even greater pool of funds through their collaborative funding programs.
