UPMC is seeking a nurse leader to serve as Chief Nursing Officer of UPMC Jameson and UPMC Horizon. UPMC Jameson and UPMC Horizon is a two hospital, three campus hub for UPMC serving the greater Lawrence and Mercer counties. The main campus in New Castle, PA, is 50 miles northwest of Pittsburgh and just 18 miles southeast of Youngstown, OH. There is one senior leadership team over both entities, and the CNO is the senior nurse leader for all nursing services on the three campuses. Additionally, the CNO has matrixed accountability for the UPMC Jameson School of Nursing. A Master’s degree in Nursing or related health care field is required; prior CNO experience is preferred but not required.

The Chief Nursing Officer provides executive nursing management, direction, and leadership for UPMC Horizon and UPMC Jameson. This position is responsible for driving, supporting, and modeling a caring service-oriented professional culture focused on employee engagement, quality, patient safety, service excellence, fiscal responsibility, and the overall patient experience. This position serves as a member of the executive leadership team at the facility and system levels, building and supporting effective collegial relationships with applicable internal and external constituents and stakeholders and ensuring optimal operating effectiveness and strategic positioning.

Company Overview

New Castle, PA is home to the Jameson Hospital campus and is the county seat of Lawrence County, PA. UPMC Jameson is a 90-bed, full-service community hospital providing inpatient hospital care, surgical services, diagnostic imaging, emergency medicine, senior care, rehabilitation, and a variety of specialized health care services. The Horizon Hospital campuses are located in Mercer County, PA, the county to the immediate north of Lawrence County. The Shenango Valley campus in Farrell is a 54-bed hospital offering a variety of inpatient and outpatient services including general surgery, emergency services, orthopedic care, wound services, and oncology through the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center. Most notably, UPMC Horizon-Shenango Valley serves as the women's health hub for the region. The Greenville campus functions as a 15-bed micro-hospital offering a medical specialty suite, inpatient and outpatient services, and an active ED.

Required Qualifications and Experience 
  • BSN required; Master’s degree in Nursing or related health care field required; PhD or DNP in Nursing preferred.  

  • At least five years of progressively increasing experience in senior nursing leadership roles; depth managing diverse patient care functions in a hospital or matrixed health system of relevant size, scale and complexity.   

  • Prior CNO experience preferred but not required. 

  • Experience in a Magnet designated environment will be seen favorably. 

  • Current Pennsylvania licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse, or ability to obtain Pennsylvania licensure; National Nurse Executive Certification (ANCC NEA-BC) preferred. 

  • Ability to successfully navigate a matrixed organizational structure. 

  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities, including staff development, mentoring, and coaching. Excellent communication (verbal and written) presentation and platform skills.
