We are pleased to be partnering with UT Health San Antonio as they seek a new Chair, Family and Community Medicine. The UT Health San Antonio Department of Family and Community Medicine has a 50-year history of residency education, innovative advances in primary care research methods, and a tradition of being “unapologetically academic” about creating new knowledge.  The department embraces the motto “inventing a healthier future for families and communities in San Antonio, South Texas and beyond.” The Department includes:

  • A vibrant and growing residency program with 42 residents; training sites focus on caring for an urban, underserved populations, but residents are prepared to be successful in a variety of practice settings;
  • The Family Health Center is the clinic where our residents and residency faculty have their continuity clinics. The Family Health Center is located in the heart of the poorest zip code in San Antonio where community residents die 20 years earlier than the rest of San Antonio. It also includes a multidisciplinary workforce that encompasses the Advanced Primary Care (APC) team comprised of community health workers, clinical pharmacists, behavioral health consultants, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and family physicians in a closely integrated practice. Results of the longitudinal outcomes of the APC interventions on poorly controlled patients with diabetes have received international recognition from the North American Primary Care Research Group (NAPCRG) and are published in Annals of Family Medicine;
  • Hospitalist Service at University Hospital, where the Department has had a hospitalist service for over three decades, allowing family physicians to model inpatient care for patients across the lifespan, from newborns and new mothers to hospitalized adults;
  • Geriatrics & Supportive Services providing comprehensive care for older adults, many of them with dementia. UT Health G&SC has a long history of close collaboration with the community to provide comprehensive care to older adults as displayed in their CARINOS Approach. In the last 4 years, they have expanded this approach to the patient’s home for dementia and primary care – CARINOS En Su CASA, to serve the underserved, uninsured community. They have two promotores or Community Health Workers (CHWs) who serve as the bridge between the patient, family, and team. A description of this approach was recently published in the Annals of Family Medicine.
  • Other services include Prenatal Services at Kennedy Clinic and primary care services offered at the Juvenile Detention Center and Adult Detention Services.
