Atrium Wake Forest Health has received a $2M endowment in order to support the Shelton Endowed Chair for Cognitive Health, with strong development efforts ongoing to secure additional philanthropic resources across the donor community.
The Shelton Endowed Chair for Cognitive Health will have a comprehensive leadership role in neurology, neuropsychology, neuropsychiatry, and senior care as related to cognitive neurology in Atrium Health and the new Wake Forest University School of Medicine-Charlotte. This includes a multidisciplinary leadership approach across -
- The Atrium Health Neurosciences Institute, one of the largest neurosciences programs in the country, including the regions only Level I Trauma Center. Neurosciences at Atrium Health is one of three key pillars of advancement within the health system.
- Cooperative approach with the Atrium Wake Forest Health ADRC with access to clinical trials, cooperative research approaches, and ongoing clinical collaboration.
- The new Wake Forest University School of Medicine-Charlotte, which has broken ground on a new 20-acre site in midtown Charlotte. The Wake Forest School of Medicine has already sent some students to Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, as part of clerkship rotations. The initial class of Wake Forest University School of Medicine-Charlotte’s first year medical students are anticipated to begin their education in 2025.
- The Department of Neurology and the Neurosciences Institute is located within Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center, one of North Carolina’s academic medical center teaching hospitals, which provides residency training for over 200 physicians in 15 specialties. Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center is undergoing an extensive renovation, ensuring that Wake Forest School of Medicine students will have access to the most modern, state-of-the-art facilities and technology in all of their learning environments. The Neurology Department at Atrium Health is a rapidly growing network of 70+ neurology providers that support 15 care locations across the greater Charlotte region. Atrium Health administers the largest stroke network in the Charlotte metropolitan area and one of the fastest growing cities in the country. The growing academic department brings exciting opportunities for innovative patient care, team-based care models, teaching, and research.

Qualifications include:
M.D. (or equivalent degree) in a related field of study.
Board certification (or eligibility) and eligibility for medical licensure in North Carolina, in one of the following areas: Neurology, with Behavioral Neurology & Neuropsychiatry, certification through the United Council for Neurologic Subspecialties (UCNS) preferred; Geriatric Psychiatry; or Geriatrics/Internal Medicine.
Demonstrated leadership experience including administrative experience and skills is preferred.
Strong clinical skills and desire to maintain a vibrant clinical practice.
A track-record of scholarly activity.
