Chapman University, a highly ranked, private, R2 institution in Orange County, California, seeks a creative, seasoned, and progressive leader to serve as the Dean of the Dale E. and Sarah Ann Fowler School of Engineering. Founded in 2019 with three undergraduate degrees and two minors, the academic offerings at Fowler have more than doubled and continue growing. The next dean will continue the exciting and rapid evolution of this new and dynamic school.
Reporting to the Provost, the Dean will lead a talented team currently composed of 30 full-time faculty and 13 administrative staff supporting all aspects of the school. The Dean will lead Fowler through a period of significant growth and development with a focus on ABET accreditation, faculty and staff hiring and development, student recruitment and success, and academic and research program growth, in addition to elevating the visibility and national reputation of Fowler and the unique opportunities it offers for its students. With a deep commitment to small classes and personalized education, student engagement in research and hands-on learning from Day 1, and being a supportive and inclusive community, students in Fowler’s five undergraduate programs and one graduate program are challenged with real-world problems and opportunities, and are provided with tools, resources, and mentoring to explore them. Offering undergraduate BS degrees in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Data Science, Electrical Engineering and Software Engineering, and a graduate MS in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Fowler seeks a dean with a strong record of scholarship and teaching in one or more of these disciplines.
As the chief academic and administrative officer of the Fowler School of Engineering, the Dean is responsible for providing strategic vision and operational leadership for all aspects of the academic and scholarly program of the school. The successful candidate will be a dynamic, energetic, and engaged scholar with a demonstrated record of leadership, collaboration, creativity, and advocacy, ready to lead the school into its next phase of growth. The Dean must be a seasoned and nimble administrator, a dedicated faculty mentor, a thoughtful colleague, and a true advocate for student learning and development. Reporting directly to the Dean are: a Senior Associate Dean; an Associate Dean and Chief Technology Officer; and the Directors of Undergraduate Education, Experiential Education, Industry Relations, Operations, and the Graduate Program.
The ideal candidate will have: an earned PhD in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Data Science, Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering or related field; current eligibility of the rank of Full Professor at Chapman University; strong interpersonal and communication skills and political adeptness to work effectively with faculty, staff, students, and campus administration; a vigorous work ethic, sound judgment, and unimpeachable integrity.
