Wake Forest University School of Medicine and Advocate Health seek a dynamic national leader with outstanding credentials in clinical and translational research to direct a new Cardiometabolic Research Center designed to advance the understanding, treatment, and prevention of cardiometabolic diseases. Advocate Health is launching a new “Translational Center of Excellence in Cardiovascular Science”, under which will sit the newly created Cardiometabolic Research Center. This role can reside in either Charlotte or Winston-Salem, NC.

Pillars and support for the new Cardiometabolic Research Center include:

  • The Wake Forest University School of Medicine, with an ongoing tradition of excellence in basic, clinical, and population research, totaling $436 million in extramural funding in 2023.
  • Advocate Health representing the recent combination of Advocate/Aurora Health and Atrium Health. With 69 hospitals, more than 1,000 sites of care and the Wake Forest University School of Medicine as the academic core, this represents an integrated healthcare system caring for more than six million patients available to support a broad-based program of clinical, translational and population research.
  • The Atrium Health Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute performing in the top 10% nationally in US News and World Report.
  •  The Wake Forest University School of Medicine’s ongoing ENVISION, a $100M fundraising campaign.
  • Existing institutional entities including, the Cardiovascular Science Center; Center on Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism; NC Diabetes Research Center; Center for Precision Medicine; and Center for Biomedical Informatics.
  • The Director will be supported by an Associate Director and institutional/enterprise leaders to recruit a team of 5-8 research-intensive faculty to fulfill the goals of the center.

The Director of the Cardiometabolic Research Center will build on the expanded scale of the enterprise and capitalize on new opportunities created by developments in science and technology to generate and apply new knowledge to treatment and prevention of cardiovascular and metabolic disease. The research center will focus on new approaches for deep phenotyping including state-of-the-art -omics, advanced non-invasive imaging, remote/mobile technologies and patient engagement tools, and advanced analytics such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, and systems biology to identify and better characterize people with or at risk for cardiovascular and metabolic conditions, and to translate this new knowledge into improved strategies for clinical care and prevention. Addressing disparities in cardiometabolic health will also be considered an important area of focus in this new center.

Physician-scientists (MD, MD/PhD, or equivalent) with a current rank of Associate or Full Professor who have national/international academic stature; a strong track record of extramural funding; demonstrated leadership and management skills necessary to design, build, and run a large program of clinical and translational research; and evidence of a commitment to promoting a culture that respects and advances diversity and inclusion of all people, will be considered.
