Clean Air Task Force, Managing Director, Remote
About Clean Air Task Force

Clean Air Task Force (CATF) is a nonprofit organization working to safeguard against the worst impacts of climate change by catalyzing the rapid global development and deployment of low-carbon energy and other climate-protecting technologies. Our mission is accomplished through research and analysis, public advocacy leadership, and partnership with the private sector. CATF is highly respected for its deep expertise and research on energy and industrial systems and strategies, technologies, and policies that can radically shrink the impact of those systems on the planet’s atmosphere. Our team of experts and advocates (and a global network of subject matter experts and civil society partners) puts this research and knowledge into action by designing and enacting public policies that drive toward zero emissions. We also support policies and work directly with private industry to innovate in technology and business models to make the path to zero emissions swift and affordable. CATF has principal offices in Boston, Washington D.C., and Brussels, with 130 staff working virtually around the world.

Our Mission: Push the technology and policy changes needed to achieve a zero-emissions, high-energy planet at an affordable cost.

Our Vision: Meet the world’s rising energy demand in a way that is financially, socially, and environmentally sustainable.

The Opportunity

The Managing Director (MD) plays a pivotal role in ensuring CATF realizes its mission and impact by leveraging internal strengths and resources to advance its work. Reporting to and working directly with the founder and Executive Director, the MD will help advance the future of an organization dedicated to combating climate change and advancing clean energy. At this important juncture, the organization is looking to expand its senior leadership team, and the MD will drive organizational strategy and effective delivery of the mission.

The MD will bring a proven track record in managing complex organizations and programs, ensuring day-to-day needs are met in a way that is sustainable and aligned to deliver the greatest impact. This new role will oversee a growing, global organization, with approximately 130 staff around the world, from San Francisco to Dubai, and a $40 million annual budget. The MD will provide oversight and support for organizational management, as well as supporting ongoing development and implementation of organizational strategy and new initiatives.

The MD will work collaboratively with the Executive Director (ED) and lead the executive team, including the Chief of People, Chief of Finance & Operations, Chief of Impact, and Chief of Engagement to translate CATF’s strategy, mission, and vision into organizational priorities within the constraints of the organization’s financial resources. They will vet internal policy and organizational issues as they arise, ensuring effective upward and downward communications within the organization. The MD’s responsibilities include overseeing the management of CATF’s mission delivery, supporting all functions, allocating internal resources to effectively achieve organizational priorities and development, overseeing workforce planning, organizational health and development,  resolving organizational issues, and facilitating the career development of new leaders. This role requires a strategic thinker who can drive impactful projects, streamline operations, and foster a collaborative and communicative work environment.

As an instrumental leader executing CATF’s organizational strategy and implementation, the MD will develop and support organizational collaboration systems and practices, oversee feedback and evaluation efforts, and coordinate shared resources among organizational leadership, program managers, and support staff. Additionally, the MD will oversee the process for developing new efforts, including progress oversight, strategy, and funding development and overseeing formal projects to incubate new initiatives. This multifaceted role requires a thoughtful high-EQ leader capable of fostering collaboration, driving strategic initiatives, and supporting the continuous growth and evolution of CATF.
