BROCKTON BEHAVORIAL HEALTH CENTER
As part of Boston Medical Center’s mission to provide comprehensive, holistic care, and to help fill an important unmet need in Massachusetts, BMC Brockton Behavioral Health Center (BBHC) provides innovative care to people with substance use disorders and mental illness. The Center includes 3 secured inpatient psychiatry units and a 26-bed Clinical Stabilization Service unit. BMC is the largest safety–net hospital and leading provider of 24/7 behavioral health and crisis services in New England.
Patients in the Center are primarily referred from other providers, including Emergency Departments. The psychiatric units serve patients aged 16 and up who pose an imminent risk to themselves or others, and they can address co-occurring substance use disorder needs. The clinical stabilization service provides an important step-down function from detox or inpatient care, with extensive 24-hour care.
In April 2023, BBHC expanded its inpatient psychiatric operational capacity from 56 to 80 beds. From October 2022 to September 2023, the Center admitted 1,384 patients to its inpatient psychiatry units. During the same period, it admitted 363 patients to its Clinical Stabilization Service units.
BBHC prides itself on its humanistic, holistic treatment of patients suffering with mental illness. Patients are treated with the respect and care they deserve at BBHC. They can utilize resources such as the sensory room when experiencing noise and other related triggers; they have access to the courtyard where they can exercise and soak up the sun. They also are welcomed by a diverse staff that reflects the composition of the community. All these factors and more contribute to the feeling of safety and wellness experienced by BBHC patients.
