The Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology & Reproductive Sciences within the School of Medicine at University of California, San Diego, is actively recruiting to fill the position of Director, Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine.

The Department of OBGYN & Reproductive Sciences and Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine are committed to academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body. The Department is expanding its clinical and research programs and is recruiting a Division Director with a strong track record of research and/or education in the field of Maternal-Fetal Medicine. The Department is interested in physician or physician scientist candidates who lead a strong research program, have a passion for delivery of outstanding patient care, and are committed to diversity, equity, and inclusivity in the workplace. As an ambassador for the Department and the Division, the Director is expected to lead by example, advise the Department Chair and provide mentorship to the research and clinical faculty, as well as to fellows, residents, and medical students. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing leadership, teaching, research and patient care and will benefit from the highly stimulating and collaborative environment within the Department.

The Division Director is a key clinical and administrative leader who is expected to balance and maintain prominence in the tripartite academic mission by promoting excellence and advancement in clinical care, education, and research. Historically, the MFM Division Director has been the Director of Maternity Services (Obstetrics). Interest in this role is preferred. Demonstrated leadership in SMFM, ACOG, or equivalent national organizations is desired along with ongoing scholarly contributions to the field.

Appointment

Appointment will be at the Associate or Full Professor level. Series will include Clinical X, Health Sciences Clinical, or In Residence. The level of appointment will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. A link to full descriptions of each series is provided below for your review:

As a member of the Health Sciences Compensation Plan, the appointee should be aware that there are limitations on outside professional activities, and clinical moonlighting is expressly prohibited. Compensation

Salary is commensurate with qualifications and based on University of California pay scales, within the range of $400,000 to $600,000.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

  • Candidates must have an MD, DO, or equivalent degree.
  • Candidates must have, or be eligible for, a California medical license or equivalent certification/permit as determined by the Medical Board of California.
  • Candidates must also be a board certified and practicing Maternal-Fetal Medicine subspecialist.
  • Candidates must have demonstrated leadership experience in academic medicine, clinical practice, or professional societies.
  • Candidates must have requisite experience and leadership qualities to develop a vision for how to sustain and grow all facets of the division’s missions as well as foster a collaborative and collegial work environment.
  • Candidates must be of high character who lead by example and in a consistent manner.
  • Candidates must relate well to a wide variety of constituents; be open to differences; lead effectively up and down the organization; and build diverse networks.
  • Candidates must have strong interpersonal skills and be able to work cooperatively and congenially within a diverse academic and clinical environment, as well as with other divisions within the Department of OBGYN & Reproductive Sciences, and vertically with leadership at UCSD Health and the School of Medicine.
  • Candidates must have at least 5 years of leadership experience at a division level or in major programmatic areas, along with a minimum of 5 years of experience in an academic medical center.
  • Demonstrated commitment to quality and safety in healthcare.
  • Candidates must have a strong publication record, with a minimum of 3 - 5 publications.

Preferred Qualifications and Desired Attributes

  • Candidates are expected to have a strong publication record; extramural funding is preferred.
  • MS in Clinical Research (or the equivalent).
  • Skilled in facilitating and able to inspire trust and confidence among UCSD’s diverse internal and external constituencies.
  • Recognition in clinical, translational, and/or basic research with an active research program.
  • Ability and willingness to engage broadly across the UCSD community as an institutional leader and to be a highly visible ambassador for the Division, the Department, and the School of Medicine both internally and in the greater San Diego community.
  • Strong leadership and management skills, and proven abilities to concurrently manage multiple complex programs.
  • Excellent judgment, independent thinking, and communication skills will be highly valued.
  • Successful history of recruitment and development of faculty, trainees, and students.
Responsibilities

Administrative

  • Serve as member of the Department’s Executive Committee, the key advisory body for the Department Chair.
  • Participate in and contribute to departmental meetings, including meetings with the Chair and Department Business Officer; Division Director meetings; and Executive Committee meetings.
  • Plan and conduct of regularly scheduled Division meetings.
  • Maintain faculty communications to create and sustain awareness of faculty status and ensure appropriate academic faculty progression; including a formal structured review at least once annually.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to division members on career development, promotions, and fostering external activities such as board membership and involvement in national and international organizations.
  • Strategically evaluate the Division’s academic program (including, but not limited to, clinical, basic science, and translational research program) to maintain rigor and impact.
  • Optimize financial and staffing resources for divisional matters, in partnership with Department Business Officer.
  • Ensure adequate funding to support training of fellows (i.e. through philanthropy, service agreements with other organizations or other revenue sources).
  • Either create, or oversee the creation of, the daytime clinical as well as the call schedules for the Division.
  • Review and advise the Chair regarding faculty recruitments, onboarding and clinical privileging.
  • Provide leadership in strategic planning, including development opportunities and outreach.
  • Provide oversight of both Health System and contracted community outreach centers that exist within the Division.

Educational

  • Ensure divisional representation to the Department on the residency and fellowship Program Evaluation Committees.
  • Ensure that there are adequate clinical opportunities within the Division to support the ACGME-accredited residency (and fellowship) program requirements; prioritize education over excessive divisional service activities for trainees.  
  • The Division Director (or designee) in conjunction with the MFM Fellowship Director is responsible for orienting trainees (residents and fellows) at the beginning of their rotation. In addition, the Division Director (or designee) is responsible for providing feedback at the end of the rotation.
  • Lead and/or participate in didactic and educational activities as deemed necessary by the fellowship and residency program directors.
  • Ensure welcoming educational opportunities exist for medical students and work with the medical student coordinator to fairly distribute student teaching responsibilities (clinical experience and didactics).

Research

  • Support the research missions of the Division
  • Foster submission of high-quality research grant applications, leading to funding for a variety of research efforts.

Clinical

  • Model professional excellence, life-long learning, and best practices through their own delivery of high-quality clinical care.
  • Dedication to respectful and equitable health care for a culturally and economically diverse patient population.
  • Support Department efforts to meet or exceed health system norms for timely clinical care and documentation.
  • Ensure fair and balanced distribution of clinical volume opportunities for Division faculty.
  • Lead the vision of responsible clinical expansion, providing excellent care for San Diego County and the region.
