The Medical Director, Gastroenterology, will work with our Valley Health team of 6,000+ caregivers, providing compassionate, high-quality care within the Northern Shenandoah Valley, the Eastern Panhandle and Potomac Highlands of West Virginia and western Maryland. The leader will work with our two acute care hospitals, including our flagship location in Winchester, VA, four critical access hospitals in Virginia and West Virginia, and more than 750 credentialed medical staff, including both employed and independent community physicians, to build a comprehensive digestive health program for our patients.

In this role, you will lead and oversee the clinical operations, strategic planning, and quality improvement initiatives and provide visionary leadership and direction, ensuring alignment with our mission of serving our community by improving health.

This pivotal role involves collaborating with a multidisciplinary team to ensure the delivery of exceptional patient care, advancing clinical research, and fostering a culture of continuous learning and innovation.

Position Responsibilities

  • Creates and executes a plan to build a comprehensive and sustainable GI clinical service line meeting the needs of the 500,000 community members in Valley Health’s primary service area.
  • Drives growth for the service line through physician recruitment and strategic initiatives.
  • Drives efficiency to increase throughput and access within the endoscopy department. Assists in controlling the cost of medical services.
  • Collaborates with other physicians and medical staff.   
  • Creates visibility and builds relationships with referring physicians to establish a robust referral network.
  • Creates meaningful partnerships with key hospital leaders in order to advance the skills and competencies of the clinical care team.
  • Works jointly with population health, quality and patient safety, primary care, and service line leaders to advance system strategies.
  • Leads both clinically and administratively on topics related to safety and quality, working closely with Valley Health patient safety and quality teams to advance safe care and best clinical outcomes for our patients.  Will be responsible for collaborating with partners in the service line to develop and track safety and quality goals.
  • Builds and maintains an appropriate rapport with patients to educate and guide them in relation to their health.
  • Initially will maintain both clinical and administrative responsibilities.  The allocation of clinical and administrative work work will change over time as the program continues to evolve and grow, though all of Valley Health’s Medical Directors maintain clinical responsibilities

Position Qualifications

  • M.D., D.O., or equivalent degree.
  • Board certifications in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology.
  • Eligible for unrestricted licensure for the state of Virginia.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Demonstrated success in initiating professional relationships, leading through both delegated authority and influence.
  • Proven ability to actively participate in creating a productive environment that promotes initiative, innovation, and continual learning.

Other Qualifications

  • The successful candidate will be a highly driven, strategic clinical leader.
  • Candidates should have a strong background in guiding a GI clinical service including recruitment, strategic project leadership, and program development.
  • Ability to effectively collaborate and communicate with referring providers to expand business and provide best possible care for patients.
  • Candidates should have a clear vision for specialty care and be able to drive growth within a digestive health service.
  • Candidates must have strong interpersonal skills with a willingness to work collaboratively with all physicians and advanced practice providers within the service line as well as with other service line leaders across the organization.
  • Candidates must have the ability to multitask, work to meet tight deadlines, and work to enhance digestive health care across the Valley Health service area.
  • Candidates must have a willingness to work collaboratively with hospital leadership and physician partners to increase efficiency in endoscopy including the development of programmatic standards.
