The American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) is a non-profit, physician-led organization that certifies physicians practicing internal medicine and its subspecialties. As an independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards of care in a rapidly changing world, ABIM’s accountability is both to the profession of medicine and to the public.  Since its inception in 1936, certification by ABIM has stood for the highest standard in internal medicine and its 20 subspecialties. With a mission to enhance the quality of health care by certifying internists and subspecialists who demonstrate the knowledge, skills and attitudes essential for excellent patient care, ABIM continuously strives to improve its Certification, Maintenance of Certification (MOC) and assessment tools.

The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) will serve as a key member of the senior leadership team, and play a critical role in influencing, shaping and operationalizing the strategic objectives set forth by the CEO.  She or he will be tasked with re-envisioning, enhancing and expanding a department that has existed to integrate the physician voice into the design and operation of all ABIM activities to ensure that all products and services (including Certification and MOC) contribute to the highest quality practice of medicine and better outcomes for patients.  The CMO will play a key role in strengthening the credential by developing a team and roadmap to further expand the circle of stakeholders to include, among other things: preserving and enhancing the important relationships with mid-career diplomates and medical societies; building and strengthening ABIM’s relationship with early-career physicians and newly certified diplomates to emphasize the importance of staying current; developing relationships with hospitals/ health systems and other provider organizations, State Medical Boards, and possibly insurers to educate them about the value of ABIM board certification; and promoting ABIM by increasing focus on patients and the public as key beneficiaries of the ABIM credential. As such, ABIM is seeking an innovative and strategic CMO who can build a team and the capabilities to achieve these objectives.  As the senior leader accountable for ABIM's Strategic Alliances efforts to build stakeholder understanding of the organization’s valuable work in defining and assessing physician competencies, the CMO will be responsible for shaping and overseeing the development of relationships between ABIM and  key stakeholders. This role will work closely with internal leadership, external stakeholders, physicians, and diplomates to advance ABIM's mission of improving the quality of healthcare through excellence in physician certification.

The ideal candidate will be an experienced and forward-thinking physician leader with a strong ability to build and strengthen new and existing relationships with key stakeholders.
