About San Francisco-Marin Food Bank (SFMFB)

Since 1987, the San Francisco-Marin Food Bank (SFMFB) has been on a mission to end hunger in San Francisco and Marin. SFMFB envisions a community free of the root causes of hunger, where everyone has access to nutritious food of their choosing and is uplifted by a network of support.

SFMFB believes that food is a human right. They believe that hunger is a solvable problem that is created and exacerbated by policy and systems. SFMFB understands the root causes of hunger are systemic injustices – including racism, classism, poverty, sexism, other forms of oppression, and their intersectionalities – which can create and perpetuate the conditions that sustain hunger and poverty.

SFMFB states its values as:

  • Accountability: SFMFB honors and takes ownership of their commitments, acting with integrity in their engagement with others.

  • Compassion: They practice empathy and affirm the worth of every person.

  • Equity: SFMFB provides fair treatment, access, opportunity, and advancement while striving to identify and eliminate barriers that prevent participation.

  • Respect: They treat people with dignity and professionalism.

  • Transparency: SFMFB shares information appropriately, openly, and honestly in all our communications.

By the numbers:

  • 1 in 5 neighbors are at risk of hunger;

  • 45,000 households served each week;

  • About 65M pounds of food distributed this year;

  • 60-70% of food is fresh produce;

  • 2 major recently expanded and renovated facilities in San Francisco and Marin.

The Food Bank operates through a variety of programming, including a robust food pantry network, farm to family, and home-delivered groceries, serving roughly 45,000 households each week. Even so, SFMFB is only serving about half of those in need. SFMFB operates facilities in both San Francisco and Marin. SFMFB distributes about 65 million pounds of food each year, providing well over 200,000 meals every day to the community, helping to bridge the meal gap that Bay Area neighbors are experiencing. The Food Bank also supports and collaborates with a network of more than 350 community organizations, operates the largest charitable food home delivered grocery program in the country, and is launching innovative work like Community Markets throughout the areas they serve.

SFMFB has an annual operating budget of about $53M, plus millions more in charitable food resources, with a staff of 200. The organization is a registered affiliate of Feeding America.
