
UPMC Presbyterian Shadyside is led by a President who is supported by a shared services team that has responsibility and oversight of the two campuses. The Presbyterian and Shadyside campuses each have their own CNO and VP of Operations. The VP of Operations is the senior day-to-day leader of clinical and ancillary functions for their respective sites and works collaboratively as a key member of the UPMC Presbyterian Shadyside senior leadership team. Responsibilities include directing, monitoring, controlling, coordinating, and evaluating the operational activities; directing all patient activity within their scope of responsibility. He/she will be the go-to person for all operational issues within their scope of responsibility. This individual will have P&L responsibility and will be working in a matrix reporting relationship with UPMC Health System Corporate Services. Responsibilities will include but are not limited to transport, imaging, pharmacy, heart & vascular, GI lab, ambulatory surgery, volunteer & community services, perioperative & surgical services, radiology, and pharmacy. This individual will be responsible for the internal and external environment so that an efficient, safe, and patient-friendly atmosphere is established. Through emphasis on quality, efficiency and best practices, the Vice President of Operations will ensure that clinical services are delivered with a best of class culture by an accountable, effective operations organization.
Responsibilities
- Carries out system initiatives for the Shadyside campus.
- Ensures that the hospital meets or exceeds JCAHO or other appropriate standards.
- Assures all operations of the Shadyside campus function efficiently and effectively in compliance with all applicable policies and procedures and legal/regulatory pronouncements.
- Collaborates with the President; recommends, develops and updates strategic, long-range plans to support the philosophy and goals of the institution.
- Demonstrates ability to establish and maintain effective medical staff relationships, proactive support for physician development and active involvement with physicians and management decision-making.
- Ensures that the key constituents within the Shadyside campus understand and support the benefits of the development of new programs and services that both link to the strategic plans of the system and the hospital's contributions to the broader enterprise.
- Regularly meets and communicates with Medical and Administrative Directors.
- Maximizes the ability of patients and referring physicians to access the Shadyside campus, continue to help build and maintain patient and referral flow.
- Continues the effort to streamline the hospital management structure and decision-making processes (including goal setting, communications and measurement of performance).
- Oversees human resources functions specific to recruitment, interviewing, hiring performance management and disciplinary actions within their scope of responsibilities.
- Responsible for continuous quality care, access and customer service improvement while enhancing profitability.
- Represents the programs, services and achievements of the hospitals in the community, the media and government.
- Develops strong working relationships with all physician organizations.
- Assists in the establishment of budgeting process and procedures based on overall guidelines of Hospital and UPMC Health System to ensure maximum profits consistent with Hospital's mission and strategic plan.
- Enhances and build the morale of the professional, administrative and other employees at both hospitals through the development and maintenance of trust with the staff.
- Ensures that the Hospital is properly organized and managed by directing subordinate directors to carry out the operations of the Hospital.
- Develops policies and procedures to adequately support the goals and objectives of the Hospital.
- Assists the President in implementing the management plan within the UPMC Health System.
- Assists the President in addressing Medical Staff concerns.
- Coordinates and handles special projects on behalf of the President of the Hospital.
- Assists the President in the administration of contracts.
- Demonstrates an active commitment to a culture of safety through activities such as actively encouraging participation in measurement surveys and developing action plans to continuously improve the culture.
- Performs in accordance with system-wide competencies/behaviors.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Education, Qualifications and Experience
- A master’s degree in a related field is required.
- A minimum of five years’ experience in a hospital/health system environment of relevant size, scale, and complexity.
- Experience working within a matrixed organization.
- Experience with various service lines including surgical services is preferred, as is experience working in an academic health system environment.
