About Ceres

Ceres is a nonprofit advocacy organization working with the most influential capital market leaders to solve the world’s greatest sustainability challenges. Through our powerful networks and global collaborations of investors, companies, and nonprofits, we drive action and inspire equitable market-based and policy solutions throughout the economy to build a just and sustainable future.

Founded in 1989 by a small group of visionary investors and environmentalists in response to the Exxon Valdez oil spill in Alaska, Ceres now operates globally with a $40M budget, 175+ staff, and influences $44T assets under management by 200+ Ceres Investor Network Members. Today, Ceres is forging the path to stabilize the climate, protect water resources, and conserve and restore nature and biodiversity. Through our Center of Excellence and major initiatives, we are working harder than ever with our members and partners to achieve this future.

Specifically, our programs address:

Climate Crisis

We work with investors, companies, and policymakers to advance climate solutions and achieve a just and sustainable future where people and the planet prosper.

Nature and Biodiversity Loss

We work across economic sectors to reverse nature and biodiversity loss by addressing key drivers such as deforestation, pollution, water scarcity, and climate change—all in a way that advances justice and equity for communities disproportionately affected by nature loss.

Water Scarcity and Pollution

We work with investors and companies to turn smart water management into a business fundamental, advancing private-sector action to address the impacts of growing demand, wasteful use, harmful pollution, and the worsening climate crisis to the benefit of all.

At Ceres, we value integrity, equity, belonging, compassion, and respect. We demonstrate those values through our communication and collaboration with our colleagues and external partners and embody them in our decision-making and advocacy efforts to create a more just and sustainable future.

The Opportunity

The Chief Program Officer (CPO) will have overall strategic and operational responsibility for Ceres’ programs, investor networks, and sustainability initiatives. Managing across a robust portfolio of programs, they will lead a diverse team of 30 issue experts who implement capital market solutions and campaigns that advance Ceres’ mission. The CPO will ensure all of Ceres’ programs are high-impact, implemented with fidelity, and continually evaluated and improved. Centering our Theory of Change in data-driven decision-making, the CPO will demonstrate optimism, resilience, and pragmatism during high-stakes and uncertain times. Internally, they will advise, coach, and develop talented professionals working across program areas and across the country. Externally, they will build relationships with investors and partner organizations to support revenue generation and program sustainability.

Reporting to the President & CEO and serving as a member of the Executive Team, the CPO will work in close partnership with our General Counsel, Chief Financial and Administrative Officer, Chief People & Diversity Officer, and Chief Development Officer to develop efficient and effective programmatic strategies, deploy best-in-class services and evidence-based interventions, and foster collaboration and communication within a fast-paced, matrixed organization.
