UPMC Bedford is a 40-bed general acute care hospital with units for medical, surgical, coronary care, and telemetry services, and offers a variety of diagnostic capabilities, including CT scan, MRI, and lithotripsy. The hospital also operates a cardiac-pulmonary rehabilitation program, an outpatient procedure unit, and an ambulatory surgical unit. The emergency facilities include 24-hour, in-house coverage by Emergency Medicine physicians, a licensed heliport for emergency transport, and trauma center affiliation.

UPMC Bedford is supported by a fine active medical staff representing many disciplines. The medical staff is augmented by specialists who travel to Bedford County to hold regular office hours at the Specialty Services Area and to provide inpatient consultations, thus bringing a wide range of professional medical services to the community.

Role Summary

The Vice President, Medical Affairs is a member of the senior leadership team and is responsible for the operations of the medical staff activities and clinical initiatives aimed at ensuring the medical care provided at Altoona and Bedford Hospitals is of the highest quality and is provided in a safe and effective manner.  The VPMA will play a key leadership role in the improvement of patient services, physician alignment and satisfaction, and lead evidence-based programs, practices and activities that deliver quality, service and financial results.

Key responsibilities of the role include physician relations/affairs, medical staff communications, oversight of key performance and patient care metrics, safety initiatives, quality and service excellence, physician leadership development, physician performance improvement and physician recruitment.  As a key member of the senior leadership team, the VPMA will serve as a strategic partner, thought leader and be involved in a variety of clinical initiatives.    The VPMA is expected to be performance-driven, collaborative and team-oriented and will regularly interface with a variety of internal and external stakeholders.  It is expected that this individual will be approximately 60% administrative and 40% clinical.

Qualifications 
  • MD or DO degree required; a Master’s degree in healthcare or business administration will be seen favorably.
  • Pennsylvania licensure or ability to receive licensure; specialty board certification is also preferred.
  • Must have five to ten years of progressively more responsible experience, at least five years of which is in a similarly complex environment, supported by a demonstrated record of achievement and administrative responsibility.
  • Must have ability to effectively communicate with senior management, staff, regulatory agencies and community organizations.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully lead, manage and motivate other senior level professional staff.
  • Experience and a documented record of achievement in managing within a community hospital with responsibility for similar functional areas.
  • Knowledge of the relationship that exists in a multi-faceted healthcare system.
  • Experience in working with senior executives and staff to analyze operating performance trends and identify solutions to problem areas.
  • Must have a history of positive medical staff and board relations.
  • Must have strong oral and written communication skills.
