The Berkeley Carroll School seeks nominations and applications for the position of Middle School Director for the 2025-26 school year. The successful candidate will be an experienced educational leader who values community, has a talent for collaborative decision-making and diligent communication, and embraces a passionate, student-centered perspective.

Berkeley Carroll is a vibrant, independent, coeducational day school serving almost 1,000 students in Prekindergarten through Grade 12. Centrally located in Park Slope, Brooklyn, Berkeley Carroll brings together students from 60 zip codes throughout New York City and New Jersey. From the founding of the original Berkeley Institute in the late 19th century, through its evolution to the present, the school has been committed to providing a rigorous college preparatory program and a student-centered approach to education that focuses on critical, ethical, and global thinking. Admission to Berkeley Carroll is competitive, and our educators, students, parents, and guardians value both achievement and community.

In the 2024-25 academic year, Berkeley Carroll enrolled 1004 students: 375 in Lower School, 292 in Middle School, and 337 in Upper School. Forty-one percent of our students identify as students of color. With a 6:1 student-to-teacher ratio, learners in all divisions enjoy close relationships with faculty, 83% of whom hold advanced degrees. Among senior administrators, 71% identify as people of color, as do approximately 40% of faculty in the Lower School, 33% of faculty in the Middle School, and 41% percent of faculty in the Upper School.

Reporting to the Head of School, the Middle School Director leads a division of about 300 students in grades 5-8 and 40 faculty members; they are an integral member of the School’s Leadership Team. They will be responsible for developing, promoting, and implementing the educational vision of the Middle School, as well as managing its day-to-day operations. The following roles are direct reports of the Middle School Director: Assistant Director of the Middle School, Middle School Dean of Students, Middle School Dean of Faculty, Grade Deans, Department Chairs, Middle School Psychologist, and Middle School Office Manager.

The successful candidate will bring direct and successful experience in education leadership within a middle school environment, as well as a passion for engaging multiple constituents in dialogue, discussion, and strategies to cultivate a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment. The successful candidate must also be a supportive team player and serve as an advocate for the school.The Middle School Director should be knowledgeable about best practices from a variety of educational approaches and be particularly familiar with Project Based Learning, Competency Based Learning, and Standards Based Grading. Berkeley Carroll’s social-emotional program is rooted in research from the International Institute for Restorative Practices as well as Responsive Classroom.A working knowledge of multiple modes of instruction in a caring, nurturing environment is essential, as is the ability to coach teachers to create such an environment. The successful candidate should possess a solid understanding of the importance of communication in building relationships between students and adults and among colleagues. This individual should be organized, nimble, demonstrate flexibility, and have a willingness to be collaborative and creative. Excellent oral and written communication skills are required, as well as experience and comfort in various educational technologies. A sense of humor is also valued.

Additional required qualifications are:

• Five or more years of teaching experience;

• Three or more years in a school-based administrative or leadership role; and

• Bachelor’s degree and MS/MA in a related field, with a preference for Education or Educational Leadership.
