The University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) is seeking a Chair of the Department of Pathology in the School of Medicine to support its missions of health care, education, and research. This key leadership role, reporting to the Dean of the School of Medicine, will manage the current department activity of 19 faculty; 2 Research faculty; 7 department staff; over 300 laboratory personnel; and 14 trainees in a residency program. The Chair must be able to lead in an environment that fosters excellence in clinical practice, research, and education for the department. The Chair must be able to establish, maintain and execute a vision for the department that aligns with UMMC’s mission areas and 2030 Strategic Plan. The Chair will work collaboratively across multiple disciplines and serves with 17 other clinical chairs on the Council of Clinical Chairs. The ideal candidate must be a thought leader and be able to establish consensus and strong relationships in a complex and dynamic organization.
The Department of Pathology’s mission is to provide services in a caring and respectful atmosphere by a team of dedicated and skilled clinicians who are committed to improving the health of all Mississippians. The Department offers a broad range of clinical, anatomic and molecular services, including Mississippi’s only full-service toxicology laboratory, and conducts funded and non-funded research and supports a Pathology residency program.
UMMC’s tripartite mission of clinical service, education, and research is realized through the department’s divisions, clinics, and training programs.
UMMC is located in Jackson, MS and serves multiple sites throughout the state. The Medical Center's three-part mission is to improve the lives of Mississippians by educating tomorrow's health care professionals, by conducting health sciences research, and by providing innovative patient care. A major goal of the Medical Center is the elimination of healthcare disparities of Mississippians.
Integral to its education and research missions, UMMC provides wide-ranging patient care programs. Four hospitals on the Jackson campus include the only children's hospital in Mississippi, a women and infants' hospital, and a critical care hospital, along with University Hospital. UMMC offers the only Level 1 trauma center, the only Level 4 neonatal intensive care nursery unit, and the only organ transplant programs in the state, in addition to many other referral services. University Physicians, the faculty group practice of the School of Medicine, includes about 600 faculty physicians, many of them among leaders in their field, who care for patients in the hospitals and clinics on campus, around the Jackson metro area, and in locations around the state. UMMC includes two community hospitals, UMMC Holmes County and UMMC Grenada.
With more than 10,000 full- and part-time employees, UMMC is one of the largest employers in Mississippi. The Medical Center's $2.1 billion annual budget - approximately one-tenth from state appropriations (represents 9 percent of the Jackson metro area economy and two percent of the state economy). UMMC continues to grow in all its mission areas.
Qualifications:
- Must have a M.D., D.O. or equivalent degree from an accredited medical school
- Board certification in a specialty recognized by the American Board for Clinical Pathology or American Board of Pathology
- Currently possess or eligible for licensure in the State of Mississippi
- At least three years of administrative leadership in healthcare and/or medical staff activities
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Academic medical center experience is preferred
Faculty appointment rank will be determined after review of academic accomplishments and experience, but the candidate must be eligible for at least an associate professor rank.
