About Newfields: A Place for Nature & the Arts

Newfields’ mission is to enrich lives through exceptional experiences with art and nature.

Newfields is one of the nation’s largest encyclopedic art museums and is part of a 152-acre cultural arts campus that also includes a botanical garden and an art and nature park.

Newfields was founded in 1883 by a group of Indianapolis citizens with the goal “to cultivate and advance Art in all its branches.” The Museum is complemented by the Oldfields estate, a National Historic Landmark, thanks to the generosity of Ruth Lilly, Josiah K. Lilly and their family, whose intent was to create a home for art in nature.

Today, Newfields recognizes that museum audiences and their interests are changing, and as Newfields transforms its audience experience, the institution is creating expanded, innovative opportunities to actively engage and entertain guests. In addition, Newfields is leveraging its indoor and outdoor spaces year-round to provide exceptional experiences.

Celebrating the diversity of donors, guests, volunteers and staff is a key part of the Newfields’ vision. Simply put, Newfields believes its guests and donors are best served by a team, comprised of both staff and volunteers, that leverages and listens to the unique viewpoints, talents, and experiences of each person who works here. The institution strives to attract and retain exceptional employees who feel comfortable in an inclusive culture that supports their ability to thrive.

Newfields serves over 650,000 visitors each year with over 350 skilled employees, interns, and fellows across various areas including art, advancement, conservation, education, natural resources, and public programming. Newfields currently has a $35M to $40M annual budget, over $350M in endowment assets and an art collection consisting of more than 40,000 works of art.
