Brown University invites nominations and applications for the role of dean of the School of Professional Studies (SPS).  Brown is a world-renowned Ivy League research university located in Providence, RI.

ABOUT THE SCHOOL OF PROFESSIONAL STUDIES

The mission of the School of Professional Studies is to draw on Brown University's commitments to academic excellence; intellectual freedom; and diversity, equity, and inclusion to create and deliver programs that empower learners at all career stages to transform themselves, their workplaces, and the communities they serve.

Today, SPS offers a range of programs of varying lengths and modes of delivery, serving over 3500 students online and an additional 200 students in residential master's programs, with plans to expand both populations in the coming years. Current offerings include professional degree programs in Healthcare Leadership, Technology Leadership, and the top ranked IE Brown Executive MBA; 35 early career master's programs spanning all disciplines; and 50 non-degree executive education and professional certificates. SPS is launching new residential master's programs in Health Informatics and Sustainable Energy in fall 2025, and developing online master's programs in Biostatistics; Health Data Science; Data Science: Policy, Governance, and Society; Management; Organizational Leadership; Business Analytics; Public Policy; Higher Education Administration; Educational Leadership; and Computer Science: AI/ML.

THE ROLE OF DEAN

Reporting to the provost, Francis J. Doyle III, the dean of the School of Professional Studies is a senior level officer who is responsible for strategic planning and high-level management of the School's academic programs and operations. The dean provides executive oversight of the School's programs, students, staff, and finances, and works with academic leaders to develop new strategic areas for growth for the School. The dean will play a critically important role in liaising with academic departments, schools, and other units on campus to ensure academic excellence and financial sustainability for SPS.The dean will draw on Brown University's commitment to academic excellence; intellectual freedom; and diversity, equity, and inclusion to create and deliver programs that empower learners at all career stages to transform themselves, their workplaces, and the communities they serve. 

CANDIDATE PROFILE

The ideal candidate will have the following professional and personal qualities, skills, and characteristics:

  • Doctorate (preferred) or other terminal degree, and/or experience in fields relevant to effective university administration;
  • Administrative experience commensurate with a leadership position involving collaboration with senior/executive level colleagues;
  • Significant management, financial, and innovative project development experience;
  • Leadership skill, vision, and ability to keep multiple priorities in focus and progressing;
  • Excellent oral, written, interpersonal, and organizational skills;
  • Understanding of current practices in professional education; and, 
  • A willingness and ability to support and promote a diverse and inclusive community.


COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

This is a full-time position that will be performed on site in Rhode Island. Salary is commensurate with experience and includes a generous benefits package.
